A small piece of software for people who buy their own supplies

Shelfwise does one job: it keeps track of what is in stock and tells you before a product runs out.

Why it exists

Independent beauty professionals order their own supplies, out of their own money, usually from more than one supplier. The stock levels live in someone's head, on a notepad, or in a spreadsheet that was last updated in a quiet week. That works fine until it does not, and it usually does not at the worst possible moment: the morning of a bridal booking, with one nearly empty bottle of lash adhesive on the shelf.

Running out of something is a small problem you can fix in a day, unless you find out too late. So Shelfwise is built around one number per product, the low stock threshold, and one event, the email that reaches you while there is still time to order.

Who runs it

Shelfwise is a small operation, not a funded startup with a support department. It is run by Olga Angel, trading as Shelfwise, from the address below. That is also the address to write to: email is answered by the person who built the software.

How it is built

The application is a server-rendered web app running against a MariaDB database in the United States. Passwords are stored as one-way hashes. Sessions are cookie-based, marked HttpOnly and SameSite, and the site is served over HTTPS only. Every database query is a prepared statement with bound parameters, and every request that changes something carries a cross-site request forgery token.

This site has no advertising code, no analytics script and no social trackers. The only cookie in the app is the one that keeps you signed in. There is nothing here measuring how long you looked at a page.

What it will not do

  • It will not sell or share your data. There is nothing to sell and nobody to sell it to.
  • It will not invent customers. There are no testimonials, customer logos or user counts anywhere on this site, because a product this new has not earned them yet.
  • It will not claim a certification, an award or a press mention it does not have.
  • It will not show you a Subscribe button before it can actually take a payment. Card payment is not switched on, and the billing page says so.
